One of the best parts of planning your wedding is the tastings you get to go to, specifically the cake tasting! Perhaps you have a clear vision in mind of what you'd like to serve your guests, but if not there are probably a few questions you have. How big should my cake be? Do I have to serve cake or can we do a different dessert option. How much is too much for the cost? All valid questions and hopefully this will guide to wedding desserts you in the right direction!
A taste for all palettes
One option for the bride and groom with a big sweet tooth is the dessert bar. Maybe you feel like your guests wont enjoy just one cake flavor or perhaps you yourself want options- why not have a wide assortment? You can have a range of dessert options, just make sure you have a cohesive look tying it all together.

Best for: The bride & groom that love dessert and adding an extra oomph to your wedding. This type of set-up would look great in any venue, just make sure there is enough room.
Budget Tips: Try not to overspend on dessert's that aren't as popular with a large number of your guests, for example mini carrot cakes. You can also include candies that are easier to buy in bulk and have personalized bags for guests to take home as their favors. Try to have at least 3-4 pieces per person if no other cake is being served. If you know someone who loves to bake -- this is perfect to enlist their help with!
Colorful & Visually Impressive
If your choice is to have the cake as one of the main focal points for your reception, take a gander at some of these lavish and over the top cakes. Lavish does not have to equal lots of layers - it can easily be the design or color of the cake!
Price Range: $$-$$$$
Best for: The bride and groom that are more traditional and want the customary cake cutting. Ballrooms and large venues have the perfect amount of space for the dramatic fixture.
Budget tip: Fake it until you make it! What I mean by that is use fake layers and serve your guests sheet cake. This can save you hundreds and give you the lavish five tiered look you're after. If you're having a large number of guests at your wedding you can change the shape of your cake from round to square to feed more people. You can also add flowers around your cake table to create more drama.
Unexpected and Non-traditional
If you're looking to add a little surprise and flare to your dessert there are plenty of ideas out there. From cake pops to donuts you can wow your guests with your creativity. If you and your fiancelove Sunday morning doughnut runs or are planning a honeymoon in Paris, these can all be incorporated into your dessert choice.

Best for: All types of weddings and venues and the bride and groom that are looking to take a theme to the next level.
Budget tip: If you want to have doughnuts as the main dessert option they can be bought by the dozen the day of at any local bakery. Want to serve cupcakes as the dessert - use your grandmothers antique cake stand to showcase them.
Like so many other brides, my main concerns were cost, look & taste! Cost weighed heavily on my mind because there was a budget to keep in line with. Luckily my venue offered an on-site baker that was able to take my design and turn it into my dream wedding cake with price being included with the food. While this may not be the case for everyone, it's always a good idea to check with your venue or caterer to see if this is an option for you! When choosing a design for your cake, as with everything else in your wedding you have to think of number of people! It wouldn't make sense to have a five tiered cake for 100 people so it would be best to keep the tiers in line with that. Regardless of budget, the cake is another extension of your wedding look and should compliment your reception, not take over it. Since dessert is often times the last piece of an event, have yours be memorable.
