Something old, something new, something borrowed, something BLUE!
by Amanda Nguyen

"Something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue." Another bridal tradition that is still upheld today!

According to The Knot, the saying comes from an old English rhyme "Something Olde, Something New, Something Borrowed, Something Blue, A Sixpence in your Shoe." These four objects that a bride is supposed to have on her wedding day are meant as good luck charms and each have separate meanings:

  • Something old symbolizes continuity with the bride's family and past history.
  • Something new represents optimism and hope for the bride's future.
  • Something borrowed is supposed to represent borrowed happiness, and be obtained from a happily married relative or friend whose good fortune in marriage will hopefully carry over to the bride.
  • Something blue started in Ancient Rome, when brides began to wear blue to represent love, fidelity and modesty.

While the first three items are slightly more personalized for each bride, it's easy to get stuck on your "something blue." Not to worry! Here are some great (and downright adorable) ideas to get your juices flowing.

1. Stitch something inside your dress. How adorable! Stitch the date, your initials, a heart... Anything you want to make your dress more personal and count as your "something blue"!

2. Shoes, shoes shoes! Most brides decide to go for longer dresses, but why not have your "something blue" shoes peeping out the bottom of your dress while you're walking?
